Data sources

The data in axi0 maps and the licenses it comes with.

Map data

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL).

Place names

Place names from GeoNames, licensed under CC BY 4.0. We changed the data: we keep a selection of places, fold accents for searching and rank places by size.

Directions

Routes and turn-by-turn steps are computed by a routing provider from OpenStreetMap data: © openrouteservice by HeiGIT | Data from OpenStreetMap. Route results are licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. The provider receives the start, via and end coordinates of a route request from our server and nothing else: not your address, not your device, not your name. We keep no copy of any route.

Privacy

The map loads nothing from anywhere else, sets no cookies and has no analytics. Searches send what you type and the part of the map you are looking at, so places there come first; our servers keep no log of them. Your location is used only when you ask for it (Show my location, Use my location) and stays in your browser; a search sends it only rounded to about a kilometer.

A first visit opens over the city of your device’s time zone, which the map reads on the device and looks up in a table inside the app: it asks for nothing and sends nothing for it. A search from far out (the whole globe in view) sends that city, rounded, instead of the map, so places near it come first.

So the map opens where you left off, this browser keeps your last view (where you were looking, how close, the turn and tilt), Night or Day and the globe setting, on this device only; nothing of it is sent to us. Turn off “Resume where I left off” in the map’s Layers menu and the last view is deleted from this browser. With an axi0 Key, the same settings and your saved places are also kept in your locker, encrypted in this browser before they leave it.
